Shonka Dukureh the Elvis actress found dead in her apartment
The blues singer Shonka Dukureh, who recently performed in Baz Luhrmann’s musical biopic Elvis has died.
Dukureh, who played influential singer Big Mama Thornton in Luhrmann’s film, was found dead in the bedroom of the apartment she shared with her two children. Dukureh was 44.
She initially studied as an elementary school teacher before taking up music. She continued to work with children, providing after-school and summer programmes, even as she pursued her career in music.

This singer had a film debut with Elvis and has been involved in the industry for many years. She played Thornton, who influences Austin Butler’s character to sing “Hound Dog”.
Dukureh appeared in multiple productions including Elvis, a recent music video for Doja Cat, and was about to release her first album.
