he was born to Freddie Joe Ward in San Diego, California , Before start acting, he spent 3 years in the US Air Force.

In the early 70s, he working in  theater and doing some tv shows. He made his 1st American movie appearance in (1975).

His 1st big role came in the  Escape from Alcatraz (1979)  He was also did role in Walter Hill’s Southern Comfort (1981).
