Tony Dow has experienced undiagnosed depression from age 20 to 40. After decades he spoke about his mental health challenges. He was also an honorary speaker at a convention for the National Depressive and Manic-Depressive Association in the year 1993.

In 1993 Tony told Baltimore Sun about his depression where he said, “I realize there’s a perceived irony about this. You know, the fact that I was in a TV program that epitomized the supposed ideal world of the 50s, and here I am suffering from depression. But I am just one of the millions.”

Tony Dow once accepted his diagnosis and started a treatment for curing it as he found hope. He channeled that hope into art, too, sculpting embellished pieces at his home studio. Dow took part in various TV series and continued to work in Hollywood. He also directed numerous episodes of series including “Harry and the Hendersons“, “Coach”, and “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine“.
