Sergey Brin comes seventh among the richest men in the world with his highest earnings. He is an entrepreneur, an American computer scientist, and co-founder of Google Inc.

Sergey Brin is an American computer scientist and an entrepreneur, who co-founded Google Inc. along with Larry Page in 1998. At a young age, Brin moved to the U.S from the Soviet Union.

Before attending Stanford University to pursue a Ph.D. in computer science he studied mathematics and computer science in college. As a research scholar, he was more interested in the extraction of information from unstructured sources, search engines, and data mining of large collections of data.

He met his partner Larry Page who is also a research scholar along with him he worked on a research project. The two men connected on the intellectual level and started experimenting with their new designs of search engines on the university computers.

At first, they called their project ‘BackRub’, and the same was funded by the National Science Foundation. Brin and Page together developed the PageRank algorithm, which Google uses to rank web pages.

As their project run successfully for many months on the computers of their university, they convinced each other to start their own company. They both put their doctoral studies on hold and with a financial investment of a $100,000 cheque from Sun Microsystems co-founder, Andy Bechtolsheim, formally incorporated their company, Google Inc, in California.

Sergey Brin was born on 21 August 1973 to a father Micheal Brin who was a mathematics professor and a mother Eugenia Brin who was a researcher at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.

He was born in Moscow in a Jewish family. For pursuing higher education Sergey moved to the US along with his family at the age of six so that he can follow the profession of his choice.

Brin joined Paint Branch Montessori School in Maryland and his father always encouraged him to study maths at home. He moved to the University of Maryland to study mathematics and Computer Science after high school and completed his Bachelor of Science in 1993.

On the basis of a graduate scholarship from the National Science Foundation, he enrolled at Stanford University for his graduation in Computer Science.

  • The idea of Google originated when Sergey Brin was working with Larry Page on a research project for their thesis. Page was interested in exploring the mathematical properties of the World Wide Web, a concept that Brin also found attractive.
  • They began working together on the research project, called ‘BackRub.’ Initially, a web crawler was used to explore the web from the starting point of the page’s Stanford home page.
  • Brin, along with Page, developed the PageRank algorithm. After analyzing BackRub’s output using this algorithm, they realized that a search engine based on PageRank would produce better results than the existing techniques.

  • Andy Bechtolsheim, the co-founder of Sun Microsystems, contributed the first funding to Google with a Cheque for $100,000.
  • By 1999, the company was operating with eight employees and had shifted its office to Palo Alto in California, an area more conducive to its growth. The office complex is known as ‘Googleplex.’
  • Over the next few years, Google launched many new features, acquired several other internet companies, and entered into partnerships with other corporations to become one of the fastest-growing internet companies in the world.[1]

  • In 2004, Google launched Orkut, a social networking site, and introduced the Google Desktop search. The same year, Google held its Initial Public Offering (IPO) which made Page and Brin millionaires. The philanthropic wing of Google, was formed to contribute to social issues and causes.
  • The year 2005 was quite productive for Google. Google Maps, Blogger Mobile, Google Reader, and iGoogle were released that year. The next year, Google acquired Youtube and introduced the chat feature in Gmail.
  • In 2008, Google launched Google Sites and a new version of Google Earth. Google Health, a personal health information centralization service, was also released in the same year, but the service was discontinued in 2011 when it was unable to achieve the desired impact.
  • Picasa for Mac was launched in January 2009 followed by Google Latitude and the latest version of Google Earth. Google Ventures, a venture capital fund for supporting new technology companies, was also introduced the same year.
  • In 2010, Google acquired Aardvark and Picnik. The Google Apps Marketplace, a new online store for integrated business applications, was launched to enable customers to easily manage cloud applications.

  • Brin became Google’s president of technology when Eric Schmidt took over as CEO in 2001. He held the same post at the Alphabet holding company after it was established in 2015, stepping down in 2019 when Sundar Pichai took over as CEO.

  • Brin, along with Larry Page, was named among the top 100 innovators in the world under the age of 35 by the MIT Technology Review TR100.
  • Brin and Page received honorary MBA degrees from IE Business School “for embodying the entrepreneurial spirit and lending momentum to the creation of new businesses.”
  • The Marconi Foundation Prize, regarded as the “Highest Award in Engineering” was bestowed upon Brin and Page in 2004, and they were elected Fellows of the Marconi Foundation at Columbia University.

Sergey Brin married Anne Wojcicki who is a co-founder of a biotechnology company named 23andMe. They both got married in the year 2007 and in 2008 their first child was born a boy and their daughter in 2011.

Sergey Brin and his wife started living separately in 2013 as he was in an affair with Amanda Rosenberg who is a Google Glass Marketing Manager and in 2015 Brin and his wife got divorced.

Sergey along with his ex-wife run The Brin Wojcicki Foundation, which donates money to various causes.

Brin married Nicole Shanahan who is a legal tech founder. They both got married on 7 November 2018 and in 2018 their daughter was born. Their marriage didn’t work for a long time that’s why they both got separated on 15 December 2021 and on 4 January 2022 Brin filed for a divorce.
