Americans celebrate National Hot Dog Day on Wednesday in late July. The American Meat Institute starts this day in 1916 to celebrate the deliciousness of hot dogs, which are believed to have originated from Germany.
The hot dog is considered one of America’s most iconic foods. Europeans brought the dish overseas and it grew in popularity around the late 1800s, according to TheHotDog.org. Europeans sold their first hot dogs at baseball stadiums in America.

Nathan’s is the most popular hot dog brand in the US, followed by Hebrew National and Oscar Meyer.
Nathan has been in business for a long time. It was first opened in 1916 when Nathan Handwerker started a hot dog stand on Surf Avenue in Brooklyn, New York.

He was so successful with his business that he was able to expand into multiple locations throughout Brooklyn and New York City. When it was bought out by Oscar Mayer (the company behind Ball Park Franks) in 1990, it cost $20 million.
