Draupadi Murmu takes an oath today as the 15th President of the Republic of India. At the Central Hall of Parliament in New Delhi, she has sworn to the highest constitutional post.
Draupadi Murmu started her political career as a member of the council:
Draupadi Murmu has a political career extending over 20 years. She belongs to Odisha. Murmu was born on 20 June 1958 in a Santal Tribal family. She was born in the Uparbeda village of the Mayurbhanj district. She completed her graduation with a Bachelor of Arts degree. From Ramadevi Women’s College in Bhubneshwar.
From 1979 to 1983 she worked as a Junior Assistant in Irrigation and Power Department in the Odisha government. Later she joined as a teacher at Sri Aurobindo Integral Education Center, Rairangpur in 1994. She continued to serve there till 1997. After that in 1997, she got elected as a councilor. She became the vice-chairperson of the Rairangpur NAC. From the same constituency, she also became MLA.
Draupadi Murmu was a national executive member of BJP‘s ST Morcha from the year 2002 to 2009. For the same party, she served as state president. She also served as a national executive member of ST Morcha till April 2015.

Draupadi Murmu served as the Honorable Governor of Jharkhand from the year 2015 to 2021. She was the first woman tribal leader who served as a Governor in India. To become India’s next President Draupadi Murmu fought as an NDA candidate on 21 July. She defeated the opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha in the election. She received 2,824 first partial votes worth 6,76,803 votes, whereas Sinha received just 1,877 first partial votes worth 3,80,177 votes.
Draupadi Murmu is the second woman and first tribal president of India. Before taking the oath, Murmu visited Rajghat in Delhi to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. She is also the first president born in independent India.
Draupadi Murmu was issued the proclamation of appointment as the new president:
At 10:03 a.m. outgoing President Ram Nath Kovind and newly elected President Draupadi Murmu arrived at Parliament House. They were welcomed by CJI Ramana, Om Birla speaker of the Lok Sabha.
The outgoing Vice-President and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha M Venkaiah Naidu were also present there. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Council of Ministers, Governors of individual states, Chief Ministers, Members of Parliament, senior civil and military officials from the government, etc attended the event.
At 10:15 a.m., N V Ramana the Chief Justice of India administered the oath of office to the President. Later she exchanged her seat with outgoing President Ram Nath Kovind. The President’s secretary presented her with the oath register to sign. After the consent of the new President, the home secretary issued the proclamation of appointment of the new president.
