Chris Hemsworth, the actor, has announced that he’s going on a break from acting after learning that he is at a higher risk of getting Alzheimer’s disease.
Thor actor Chris Hemsworth discovered the truth after undergoing tests for his Disney plus documentary series Limitless.
He told Vanity Fair that the tests clarified his “biggest fear,” and that he will now try to take “preventative measures.”
Dementia, which causes confusion, memory loss, and communication difficulties, can be brought on by Alzheimer’s disease.
Hemsworth discovered that he carries two copies of the ApoE4 gene, the first from his mother and the other from his father, producing him eight to ten times more probable to create the illness than those who do not carry both copies of a gene.
About 2% to 3% of the population has two genes.
“It’s not like I’ve been handed my resignation,” Hemsworth said, but added the news “really triggered something in me to want to take some time off”.
“If you look at Alzheimer’s prevention, the benefit of preventative steps is that it affects the rest of your life,” he said.
“It’s all about sleep management, stress management, nutrition, movement, fitness. It’s all kind of the same tools that need to be applied in a consistent way.”
In the Limitless series, Hemsworth puts his body to the test in order to live a longer and healthier life.
He explained that while he had not been given a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s, he had been warned of the increased risk.”It’s not a pre-deterministic gene, but it is a strong indication,” he said. “Ten years ago, I think it was more thought of as determinant.”
Hemsworth stated that the original plan for the series was for him to receive all of his genetic test results live on camera, but show creator Darren Aronofsky informed him privately once the results were received.
Following that, the Marvel star was given the choice of having removed any pointers to Alzheimer’s from the show, but he chose to also include his gene mutation of Alzheimer’s to raise awareness and understanding.
“My concern was I just didn’t want to manipulate it and over-dramatise it, and make it into some sort of hokey grab at empathy or whatever for entertainment,” Hemsworth said.
Hemsworth also told the magazine that his grandfather was now being treated for Alzheimer’s.
George Miller‘s upcoming Mad Max sequel Furiosa, which also wrapped filming earlier this month, will feature the actor.
After completing the publicity campaign for Limitless and his other contracted work, the thirty – nine years declared that he would take a break from acting.
He’ll be returning to Australia to spend more time with his mate, actress Elsa Pataky, and there own three children in Byron Bay.
